How to Record a Called-Away Covered Call

Use Call Away when a covered call is exercised and the underlying shares are sold. Recording the call-away keeps the position outcome, wheel chain, performance, and tax information consistent.

Before you start

The position must be OPEN and use the Covered Call (CC) strategy.

Have the call-away date, assignment price, share quantity, and any fees from your broker statement.

Make sure the covered call has an underlying cost basis; it is needed for an accurate stock gain or loss calculation.

1

Open the covered call details

Find the exact CC position that was exercised.

  • Open Trades and click the covered-call row.
  • Verify the ticker, strike, expiration, and CC strategy in the detail panel.
2

Choose Call Away

This opens the lifecycle form for a covered-call assignment.

  • In the action area, click Call Away.
  • Do not use Assign; Assign is for cash-secured puts.
3

Enter the broker-confirmed details

Use the actual stock-sale details from the brokerage activity.

  • Set the call-away date.
  • Confirm the assignment price and number of shares sold.
  • Enter fees and notes when applicable.
4

Confirm the outcome

Save only after the details match your broker statement.

  • Click the confirmation button to record the call-away.
  • The position becomes closed and its detail panel shows the outcome.
  • Review the Taxes page if you need to check whether the stock sale has complete cost-basis data.
Good to know

A missing cost basis can make the stock-gain portion incomplete, so add it through Edit before relying on tax figures.

Use the Wheels page to review the relationship between the assigned CSP and later covered-call activity.

What to do next

Review your tax estimate and data-quality notices on the Taxes page.
