How to Expire a Trade

When an option expires out of the money, the contract is worthless and you keep the full premium. Use Expire to record this outcome so your P&L and reports are accurate.

Before you start

The trade must be in OPEN status.

Confirm the contract actually expired — check your broker statement if unsure.

Have the expiration date and any closing fees ready.

1

Find the expired trade

Locate it on the Trades page.

  • Open the Trades page from the sidebar.
  • Look for the trade that expired. It may be highlighted if expiring-today highlighting is turned on.
  • Click the trade row to open the details dialog.

Tip: Use the status filter to show only OPEN trades — this makes it easier to find trades needing action.

2

Click Expire

Opens the expire form.

  • In the trade detail dialog, look for the Expire button.
  • Click it. A focused form appears with only the fields that matter for expiration.
3

Enter the close date and fees

This is typically the contract's expiration date.

  • Set the close date to the day the contract expired.
  • If your broker charged any fees, enter the fee amount.
  • Add any notes if you want to record extra context.
4

Confirm and save

Finalize the expiration.

  • Click Mark Expired.
  • The trade status changes to EXPIRED.
  • Your realized P&L now reflects the full premium you kept minus fees.

Tip: After expiring, the trade moves to your closed trades. You can still view it by including EXPIRED in your status filters.

Good to know

The app does not auto-expire trades. You need to mark each one manually so your reports stay accurate.

If you accidentally expired the wrong trade, contact support — there is no undo button yet.
