How to Buy to Close a Trade

Sometimes you want to close a trade before expiration — either to lock in profits or to cut losses. Buy to Close records the buyback cost so your P&L reflects the actual outcome.

Before you start

The trade must be in OPEN status.

Know the buyback cost per share and the close date.

Have any fees from the closing transaction ready.

1

Open the trade details

Find the trade you want to close early.

  • Go to the Trades page.
  • Click the trade you want to close.
  • Verify the ticker and strategy in the detail dialog.
2

Click Buy to Close

Opens the close form.

  • In the action area, click Buy to Close.
  • A form will ask for the close date, buyback premium, and fees.
3

Enter the closing details

Record what you paid to close.

  • Close date — the day you bought the contract back.
  • Buyback premium per share — what you paid per share to close the position.
  • Fees — any commissions or fees.
  • Notes — optional.

Tip: The buyback premium is per share. The app multiplies it by the number of contracts × 100 automatically.

4

Confirm the close

Save the buyback and let the app calculate your P&L.

  • Click Buy to Close to confirm.
  • The trade status changes to CLOSED.
  • Your realized P&L updates: premium received minus buyback cost minus fees.
Good to know

Closing early at a profit is common. A popular rule of thumb is to buy back when you have captured 50–75% of the premium.

The app tracks buy-to-close and expiration separately so you can compare strategy outcomes in your reports.
